At last week’s Thought Activator, business coach and mentor, Rita Malvone kicked off the evening with discussing building connections in the work place, and how our working relationships impact office dynamics and our professional development.
We were thrilled to put on yet another sold out IPWS Thought Activator, where 40 professionals gathered for an evening of networking and discussion at Kartel Wine Bar.
As walking the fine line between personal and professional in workplace relationships can prove challenging, Rita shared her best tactics for building good relationships in the workplace, and how to sustain a good environment in today’s working ecosystem:
- The formula is 4 steps: Start with small talk – Next, create rapport – Follow by building trust – And finally, make sure to foster the relationship
- The 5 C’s for successful workplace relationships are: Communication, Collaboration, Culture, Creativity, Commitment
- Set boundaries that are comfortable for you and align with the type of impression you want people to have of you.
- Remember, you are the shadow you cast – how you present yourself and how you engage are what people will remember most about you. Cast an authentic leadership shadow.
- Don’t be afraid to tell people the best way to work with you: (e.g. I am at my best if we can talk in the morning after I’ve had my coffee.).
- Remember the best way to give feedback, “EBI”: Start with a positive statement, followed by “Even Better If…” and suggest the improvement you wish your colleague makes.
A big thank you to Rita for sharing her expertise and sparking lively discussions among everyone who attended the event. Thank you also to our venue, Kartel, as well as everyone who joined the evening. Don’t miss our next Thought Activator with the topic The Dilemma of Self-promoting coming up on March 27, as well as our bigger quarterly event, Women of China on March 13. Early bird tickets are now available for both events!
