What’s the Problem with the Word Feminism?
When we decided to introduce a new event series this year — the IPWS Thought Activator — our aim was to host a networking-based event that centered around topics or themes that often are not discussed, or that encourage discussion and debate. Our Thought Activator theme for April was a true ‘thought activator’ and we’re proud to have hosted an evening where attendees felt comfortable discussing what was viewed as a loaded topic.
Our Activator of the Month, Olga Yanovskaya, Founder of HerCentury, engaged attendees in a conversation about the misconceptions and perceptions of ‘feminism,’ the history behind the word, and how we move forward.
Our evening included such discussions as:
I believe in the need for gender equality… but why don’t I say, “I’m a feminist?”
How we define feminism?
Is the definition of “a belief that we must define, establish, and achieve political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes” radical? Or are activists portrayed as radical?
What impact has social media had on feminism?
How do we present information that brings positivity back to feminism?
Should we use a different word other than ‘feminism?’
What can we do to change perceptions?
We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Olga, and to each and every person (women and men) that attended the evening and felt comfortable to engage in an open discussion. We believe that by talking about these topics, we can encourage positive change.
