We’re back! IPWS is excited to welcome you to the kickoff of our 2022-2023 season! This will be IPWS’ 30th year as a community organization in Shanghai, and we hope you’ll join our first event to re-connect, get inspired and celebrate another year. On October 27st we’re kicking things off with a combined Annual General Assembly (AGA) and Thought Activator. Every year, the AGA is held to: · Review IPWS’ activity in the past year, and showcase the plan for the new season. · Introduce and confirm the IPWS Board of Directors for the next term. This year, we’re combining the AGA with our most popular event, the IPWS Thought Activator.

Missionaries, Madams, Spies, and Scribes: The Women of Old Shanghai.
In this talk, you will meet the trailblazing women of Old Shanghai: feisty iconoclasts who forged new paths in what was still very much a man’s world. Who were they? There was the founder of the Women’s Bank; the American triple agent; the left-wing feminist writer; the businesswoman who ran Old Shanghai’s most famous bordello; the panda explorer; the socialite war correspondent; the doctor; the opium addict writer … and more. They came from China and from the West, and their lives and achievements were nothing short of extraordinary. How were they able to do what they did? Tina Kanagaratnam is the co-founder of Historic Shanghai, a heritage group established in 1998 to delve into, and share, the city’s unique, hidden histories ~ on walking tours, in talks, and a book and film club.
