With only a couple more weeks to go until the IPWS Leadership Summit on Friday May 25th, we’d love to introduce you to more of our amazing speakers for the day.
The theme of this year’s conference is “Leading with Confidence: A Roadmap to Success”.
For years, women kept their heads down and played by the rules, assuming if they work hard enough, the ‘management’ will recognize and reward them accordingly. Yet as they’ve worked – steadfast and diligently – it sometimes looks as if the men around them are getting promoted faster.
Through storytelling, firsthand experiences, and facts our Speakers will discuss how foundational Confidence is to the personal and professional growth of women. This year’s Summit aims at building awareness and providing ideas and solutions so that women leave the Summit with practical tools that remind and activate Confidence within themselves and shared with others.
One of our amazing speakers for the day is Roseann Lake, author of Leftover in China: The Women Shaping the World’s Next Superpower and The Economist’s Cuba correspondent.
Roseann Lake covers Cuba for The Economist and was previously based for 5 years as a reporter in China, where she became fascinated with the lives of “leftover women,” or women who have failed to get married by their culturally imposed sell by date of 25, 27 or 30, depending on who’s counting.
Contrary to what their unsavory label implies, Roseann quickly realized that these women are tireless crusaders for the right to live on their own terms and timelines — something that generations of women before them have been denied. In “leftovers”, she saw a stunning deviation from tradition and a promising population of women who embodied a very special kind of confidence: the kind necessary to live against the grain.
As Roseann describes in her new book, Leftover in China: The Women Shaping the World’s Next Superpower, “leftovers” are emblematic of what it means to pursue one’s personal definition of happiness and self-fulfillment, even when it flies in the face of societal prescriptions and expectations. Ultimately, she believes that both personally and professionally, having at least a pinch of the “leftover” mentality is something we’d all be well-served to embrace.
Roseann Lake is the author of Leftover in China: The Women Shaping the World’s Next Superpower (W.W. Norton) and currently serves as The Economist’s Cuba correspondent. She was previously based in Beijing, where she spent time as a television reporter and journalist. Her work has appeared in Foreign Policy, The Atlantic, Vice, and New York Magazine, among others. She divides her time between New York City and Havana.
