[PHOTOS + RECAP] How Can We Create an Inclusive Work Culture?

Creation of an inclusive work culture has become more crucial than ever. Through grassroots movements, many have realized that the only way to address the many existing inequalities is through allyship and having the difficult conversations. It is no longer enough to rely on organizational changes to happen, but rather, we, as individuals must take action on a day to day basis.

Last Thursday at Shanghai Slim’s, IPWS brought together an inspiring panel of experts to discuss how, as individuals, we can contribute to creating a more inclusive work culture.

The panel shared their personal experiences and left us with actionable insights as well as inspiring stories surrounding diversity and inclusion in their industry and work place.

We asked our panelists, what advice would they give to individuals in order to create an inclusive culture?

Diversity and inclusion is a hot topic now. As individuals, we all have a story to share. Exposing people to differences in the workplace through storytelling really works. When you put an authentic story to a “label,” it’s no longer a label but a real person. Tell your stories!

For me its about going for what you believe in. Stand up for yourself and make sure you are clear on the environment and culture you are aiming to create. If your heart and mind are in the right place nothing can stop you from achieving what you want.

Inclusivity is an individual decision with a domino effect. Once we go about actively changing our individual perceptions on what is categorically ‘other’ vs us, by connecting with humans outside our comfort zones of race, religion, nationality etc then inclusion becomes an organic expansion and diversification. It is up to each one of us to understand and advocate for inclusivity.

A warm thank you to our incredible panel for an inspiring discussion, as well as to the moderator, our very own IPWS Sponsorship Executive and former Women Leadership Award Winner, Fukuko Ayama.

A huge thank you also to Shanghai Slim’s for having us for the evening, and also to all the IPWS members and everyone who joined!

Stay tuned for our next event, the 2020 Annual General Assembly, coming up this September for a night of networking and a look at the upcoming season with IPWS.
