Women Leadership Awards – Essay DOs, DON’Ts and Examples

With the IPWS Women Leadership Awards nominations still open until Monday April 5, 10 PM, we want to make sure that the nomination process is a smooth as possible for you.

The story-based essay often makes nominees question whether they should apply. Perhaps because we don’t reflect on our achievements so often, or because it’s just difficult to know where to begin.

To help all nominees, we have put together a brief set of guidelines to follow, and a few examples from previous WLA winners. Writing a successful essay is a great exercise on a personal level, and actually much easier that it may seem at first glance!

3 Do’s:

1. Tell a story that portrays how your leadership is conveyed, perceived and what you stand for in terms of core values

2. Share examples that are measurable, quantifiable and put things in perspective

3. Talk about people around you that you are working with, and tell a story that uses that pattern

Also elaborate on:

  • Challenges: what were the challenges you have faced that triggered your leadership skills and made you to take a leap, stand out, etc.
  • Actions: what were the series of actions that you took, which led your team to move beyond
  • Results: what’s the result obtained and what did you learn out of this?

2 Don’ts:

1. Avoid telling your life chronology

2. Avoid talking solely about your own challenges, without mentioning how your team has supported you and how you have supported them to overcome the challenges

But sometimes all we need to get started is an example. We reached out to some past WLA winners and finalists, and you can read their WLA Essays here!

Don’t hesitate to nominate yourself or a deserving friend, colleague or boss! We look forward to receiving your nomination!

Sincerely,
IPWS Board of Directors
